Coconut oil, or copra oil, is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut tree and processed using Cold Pressed method. Major coconut growing states are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Odisha.
Owing to an increase in production of coconut, India has been exporting coconut oil to Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka since April 2017. Coconut oil is high in healthy saturated fats that have different effects than most other fats in the diet. These special fats are responsible for a lot of the health benefits of coconut oil. It has a delicate taste, and is widely available.
It protects the skin from UV Rays and increases metabolism. With a very high saturated fat content of about 87%,coconut oil is one of the best fats for high-heat cooking, including frying. It improves dental health – it effectively reduces bacteria, like a mouthwash does, relieves skin irritation and eczema, moisturizes the skin, increases ‘good’ HDL cholesterol, protects hair from damage, improves wound healing…..the list grows – use it to benefit!
