Commonly called Kempu alasande in Kannada and lobia in Hindi, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), originated in Africa and is widely grown in Africa, Latin America, S.E.Asia and in the southern United States. It is chiefly grown for grain and animal fodder.

It is a minor pulse cultivated mainly in arid and semi-arid tracts of grown in pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West UP along with considerable areas in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Cowpea has many nutrients ~ it is rich in fibre, protein, iron, potassium, low in fat and calories.

Cowpea has folate (Vitamin B9) which assists in lowering the chances of neural tube defects. It prevents anaemia, supports a healthy metabolism, helps maintain strong bones, encourages mental well-being, helps heal and repair muscle tissue, helps maintain bowel health, supports a healthy cardiovascular system, supports the immune system and prevents diabetes.
